Nurses and other patient care providers such as nursing assistants are known to suffer from high rates of work related musculoskeletal disorders. Manually moving and handling of patients by care providers has been established as the primary factor involved in the occurrence of these injuries. The aim of this research was to develop an assessment tool that accurately analyzes patients’ mobility and leads the care giver to select the appropriate safe patient handling device and properly sized equipment/slings to perform different tasks.
The assessment tool needed to provide a common language structure for rehabilitation, nursing services and other patient care areas to use in collaborating and communicating about on safe patient handling. Having a clinical tool that nursing staff integrate into their daily assessments and documentation will serve an effective, efficient and valuable part of the safe patient handling program. this is critical to the ergonomics of patient handling and transfers.
This short presentation will convince you that our tools and programs can significantly aid in determining safe patient handling strategies as well as adequately address space and patient anthropometric challenges. For specific info and training contact jkelby@ergo-pathsystem.com
